Summary: The exhibition "Oman" in De Nieuwe Kerk is devoted to the history and culture of a country that, while rapidly undergoing modernisation, is at the same time determined to preserve its heritage. Oman is a modern nation, but one that is clearly pursuing its own distinctive path. Located on international trade routes such as that of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), Oman has a strong, centuries-old tradition of maritime trade. Traces of trade, especially in incense and perfume, appear in numerous archaeological finds. Another prominent theme of the exhibition is Islam: Oman is the only country in which the majority of the population adheres to Ibadism, an early form of Islam. The importance of fighting and defence is clear from the many forts with their distinctive architecture, and from numerous superb weapons. Then there is the country's celebrated silverwork, in richly decorated jewellery, amulets and ceremonial costumes.

Exhibition held October 17, 2009-April 18, 2010, De Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam.
